The Mojave Desert
Interested in exploring the wonders of the desert in person? Come to the Mojave Desert, where you will be able to see how organisms interact with each other and their environment in a desert ecosystem. Located in southwestern United States, the Mojave Desert occupies about 50,000 square miles in the states of California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
The climate of this ecosystem is much like any other belonging to the desert biome: it receives less than 13 cm of rain a year and it has hot days and cold nights. More specifically, the Mojave Desert has extreme temperatures with distinct seasons. In winter, temperatures can drop to about -7 °C, while temperatures can pass 50 °C during the summer. The yearly average high temperature is about 30 °C, while the yearly average low temperature is around 16 °C.
Home to nearly 2000 species of plants, about 200 of which are unique to this desert, the Mojave Desert is as geologically diverse as it is ecologically. Mountain ranges, mesas, sand dunes, cinder cones, domes and dry river beds can be found within its boundaries. The Mojave Desert offers an ecological adventure to all who chose to come and discover both the subtle and obvious marvels in this ecosystem.
Ecology enthusiasts will be rewarded through mere observation; look around this website to see what you can find in the Mojave Desert ecosystem.
