The energy flow, as in most ecosystems, begins with kinetic energy from the sun's rays. That energy enables the plants to grow through primary production in the first trophic level, and is then available to herbivores in the second trophic level. The Bobcat, or the apex predator, is located in the third trophic level and feeds on heterotrophs in lower trophic levels. Decomposers, in this case the vulture, bacteria and fungi, feed on detritus and turn the organic matter into nutrients, which will be then available for plants to take up so that the cycle of matter can continue.
